GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Regional Director of Inpatient Services for Behavioral Medicine and according to established policies and procedures, assumes a primary leadership role in the overall functioning of H3, the adult psychiatric unit. As the Nurse Manger for the behavior health adult service, also assumes clinical supervision and administrative oversight to the GTU, gero-psychiatric unit. An experienced Registered Nurse, who in addition to providing direct patient care is accountable for facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to patient care, patient flow, staffing, resource utilization, and problem solving. Assists in monitoring and evaluating staff performance based on established standards of care. Ensures quality and the safe delivery of care to all patients.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ï¿½Assists staff in applying the nursing process in the management of patients with complex needs.
ï¿½Demonstrates accountability for patient care delivery and promotes accountability among all staff.
ï¿½Promotes high work standards and quality performance of self and other staff members. Holds self and others accountable.
ï¿½Provides expert nursing care to a select group of patients. Acts as a resource to nursing staff and students.
ï¿½Supports and participates in collaborative rounding within an interdisciplinary framework of care.
ï¿½Assists in identifying educational needs of the unit staff and works collaboratively with Professional Practice Department.
ï¿½Responds to changes in the internal and external environment that impact patient care.
ï¿½Participates in annual competency development.
ï¿½Updates nursing policies to reflect current practice.

ï¿½Coordinates unit based staffing assignments on a shift basis to achieve high quality and cost effective care.
ï¿½Demonstrates patient first and cost effective approach to patient care in terms of equipment, staff, supplies, and all other resources.
ï¿½Anticipates staffing needs for subsequent shifts and makes necessary arrangements for coverage.
ï¿½Participates in the development of the yearly operational and capital budgets as requested.
ï¿½Addresses daily staffing variances and the monthly DOR.
ï¿½Has responsibility and oversight of the payroll, assuring that all staff are paid correctly and on time.
ï¿½Accountable for the coordination of care on the unit to achieve desired outcomes while delegating tasks and assigning care based on individual or group strengths and potentials.
ï¿½Provides ongoing feedback to Regional Director of Inpatient Services re: staff performance and completes annual performance evaluations of nursing staff.
ï¿½Holds staff accountable to practice according to established standards.
ï¿½Provides progressive discipline to staff members up to and including termination of employees in conjunction with the Regional Director of Inpatient Services.
ï¿½Conducts interviews with potential new hires and contributes to the hiring process of their unit.
ï¿½Development of performance improvement plans for staff in coordination with the Regional Director of Inpatient Services.
Safety and Regulatory
ï¿½In collaboration with Security assures safety and security of staff, patients, and others.
ï¿½Monitors clinical practice and addresses safety regarding nursing practice, environment, and equipment.
ï¿½Participates in Tracers and all regulatory pre-work.
ï¿½Familiar with service line metrics/dashboards in striving to provide safe and appropriate care along with best practices.
ï¿½Conducts random audits on new nursing work flows, nursing documentation, and new programs.
ï¿½Supports Tenetï¿½s quality initiatives.
ï¿½Holds staff accountable for reporting unsafe practices using established MWMC channels.
ï¿½Understands and abides by the Department of Mental Health policies and procedures. Communicates with DMH around serious issues and participates in bi-annual surveys.
ï¿½Understands and enforces The Joint Commission standards.
ï¿½Assures that the Behavioral Heath service is Joint Commission ready at all times.
ï¿½Champions new initiatives and helps in unit/departmental or hospital-wide committees/task forces.
ï¿½Supports opportunities for professional growth and development of staff.
ï¿½Supports and participates actively as a member of the Shared Governance model.
ï¿½Supports and is involved with the Preceptor Program, developing our nurses of the future.
ï¿½Participates in orientee/preceptor conferences.
ï¿½Responds to requests for assistance regarding educational needs.
ï¿½Communicates with Professional Practice Department re: educational and developmental needs of staff.
ï¿½Maintains responsibility for personal professional growth and development.
ï¿½Demonstrates effective 2-way conversation with staff
ï¿½Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts.
ï¿½BSN required, MSN preferred.
ï¿½5 years of progressive leadership experience in psychiatric nursing.
ï¿½Mental Health certification preferred.
ï¿½Proficient with customer service principles and patient and family centered care.
ï¿½Excellent verbal communication skills and evidence of collaborative practice (SBAR).
ï¿½Demonstrates excellent teamwork and collaboration and maintains high standards of professional practice.
ï¿½Understanding of TJC, DMH and DPH regulatory standards.
ï¿½Patient care environment; almost constant standing, walking, and pushing/moving of patients and equipment. Exposure to patient elements.
